The default value display for Field output areas: a Kotlin value in, a compact HTML fragment out.
ValueVisualizer.visualize is the entry point; Any.h and Box.viz are how it is usually
reached — .h hands back the fragment, viz displays it into a channel of a live box. A type
can take over its own rendering either by implementing ToHTML or by registering a printer with
registerValuePrinter; both are trusted to return well-formed HTML, while ordinary strings,
characters, keys and reflected values are escaped here.
Output is bounded — ValueVisualizer's own KDoc below covers dispatch order, the
built-in formatters and the size limits. Whatever those limits elide (the tail of a long string
or list, extra fields of an object) becomes an expander link, resolved later by
renderLazyFragment from the server's /lazy-value-fragment route, so the rest of the value is
only ever rendered if someone asks for it.
interface ToHTML
Interface for objects that can provide their own HTML representation
fun toHTML(): String
object ValuePrinterRegistry
Registry for custom value printers
object ValuePrinterRegistry {
private val printers = mutableMapOf<Class<*>, (Any) -> String>()
fun <T : Any> register(clazz: Class<T>, printer: (T) -> String) {
Register a custom printer for a specific type
fun <T : Any> register(clazz: Class<T>, printer: (T) -> String) {
@Suppress("UNCHECKED_CAST")
printers[clazz] = printer as (Any) -> String
}
internal fun getPrinter(value: Any): ((Any) -> String)? {
The printer registered for value's type, or null.
Resolution walks the superclass chain most-derived first and, at each step, that class's whole interface closure — every interface it declares, and everything those extend.
The interface closure is the part worth writing down, because for eight months this looked at
value::class.java.interfaces only: the interfaces of the runtime class, declared directly.
That is enough for a type whose impl says class FooImpl : Foo, and silently useless for one
that says class FooImpl : BarImpl(), SpecificFoo where SpecificFoo : Foo — the registration
for Foo can never fire, and the value falls through to toString() with no error anywhere.
Measured on 2026-08-22 against Kotlin DataFrame, which is exactly that shape:
ValueColumnImpl<T> : DataColumnImpl<T>(), ValueColumn<T> and ValueColumn<T> : DataColumn<T>,
so register(DataColumn::class.java) in afield.ui.visualization.DataFrameVisualizer was dead code and a
column rendered as ValueColumnImpl age 0 15 1 30 2 45 3 22. FrameColumnImpl has the same
shape. The bug was found by looking at a documentation capture, not by a test: the smoke test's
column assertion was contains("Alice"), which a toString() fallback satisfies too.
Ordering is defined rather than incidental, because a value can now match more than one registration: the most-derived class wins, and within one class its own declared interfaces are tried before their supertypes (breadth-first). This can only turn a value that previously fell through into one that dispatches — it cannot move a value from one registered printer to another, because a match found by the old walk is still found first by this one.
internal fun getPrinter(value: Any): ((Any) -> String)? {
var clazz: Class<*>? = value::class.java
while (clazz != null) {
printers[clazz]?.let { return it }
findInInterfaceClosure(clazz.interfaces)?.let { return it }
clazz = clazz.superclass
}
return null
}
Breadth-first over roots and everything they extend, so declared interfaces win over theirs.
private fun findInInterfaceClosure(roots: Array<Class<*>>): ((Any) -> String)? {
val queue = ArrayDeque(roots.toList())
val seen = HashSet<Class<*>>(roots.toList())
while (queue.isNotEmpty()) {
val iface = queue.removeFirst()
printers[iface]?.let { return it }
iface.interfaces.forEach { if (seen.add(it)) queue.addLast(it) }
}
return null
}
}
object ValueVisualizer
Render a Kotlin value as a compact, escaped HTML fragment for Field output areas.
Dispatch order is ToHTML, a ValuePrinterRegistry match, built-in formatters, then reflective
or toString() fallback. Built-ins cover primitives, arrays and collections, Field linalg,
FLine, Functions.Fn, Plotly plots, and other repository types. Numeric series may add summary
statistics and guarded SVG sparklines; vectors, matrices, FLines, and functions may add guarded
thumbnails. The renderer uses a curated per-type color palette, not a monochrome theme.
Lists, maps, strings, fields, nesting, plots, and thumbnails have explicit bounds below. Circular detection is identity-based and scoped to the current recursion path, so a repeated acyclic value is not mislabeled. User-supplied ToHTML and registered-printer output is trusted HTML; ordinary strings, characters, keys, and reflective values are escaped by their formatters.
visualize returns the outer .value-viz element. Box.viz sends it to a display channel,
Any.h returns it directly, and registerValuePrinter extends the registry process-wide.

Renders an Functions.Fn as its usual reflective field tree, with a small,
safe line plot appended below — the same spirit as formatFLine's thumbnail.
The reflective tree (domain / evalFn / graph) is kept verbatim via

plot is wrapped in runCatching so a misbehaving evalFn can only cost us
the thumbnail, never the whole value display.

Samples fn over a finite window of its domain and builds an SVG polyline.
Mirrors the NaN/∞-safe sampling used by Fn.plotHtml: unbounded domains fall
back to a small preview window, non-finite samples become gaps in the path,
and an all-non-finite function yields no plot (returns null).

Core struct renderer shared by data classes and maps. Collapses onto ONE line when the
struct is small and none of its fields are block-level; otherwise emits a line model
with cuddled braces — a single struct-valued field cuddles its opening brace
(Outer { k -> Inner {) and trailing closing braces collapse together (}}) instead of
marching down the left margin.

A vec4 as four signed bars from a shared zero line, labelled x/y/z/w.
It used to draw the (x, y) arrow and nothing else — the panel showed a 2D vector for a 4D
value and dropped z and w without saying so, which is a picture that is simply wrong for
the common case of four numbers packed together for a shader. Four numbers have no faithful
arrow, so this shows them as four numbers.
Bars share one scale (the largest magnitude), so relative size is readable across components,
and they take their colour from matrixCellColor — the same diverging positive/negative ramp
the matrix grids use, since this is the same question about the same kind of value. A
non-finite component gets that helper's distinct dark-red cell rather than a bar of NaN
height. Returns null when every component is non-finite, which withLinalgThumbnail reads as
"text only".

double-precision matrices
Siblings of the …fc formatters above for the generated f64 matrix family (Matrix2d/Matrix3d/Matrix4d). Heatmap cells take Float, so the f64 entries are narrowed only for the thumbnail; the terse header prints the full-precision values.

linalg thumbnails
Appends a small, GUARDED inline SVG thumbnail beneath the terse text head,
mirroring the discipline of formatFn/renderFLineThumbnail: the text is kept
verbatim and the thumbnail is a bonus. render runs inside runCatching; if it
throws or returns null (e.g. a non-finite value), the plain inline text is
returned unchanged so a misbehaving value costs only the thumbnail.

recordTable applied to value display, or null to fall through to the ordinary list rendering. Narrower than recordTable itself, because here it is replacing a rendering that already works:
- every cell must be a scalar — a record holding a list or a nested struct has no useful single-cell text, and the struct tree shows it better than a table would;
kotlin.Pairkeeps its denser inlinea to bform, andTripleits reflective one;- a list of lists keeps its nesting, which carries a sparkline per row that columns would
swallow (
recordTablestill tables one on request); - a type that renders itself, via ToHTML or a registered printer, is never flattened into cells.

Reduces a heterogeneous list to a numeric series suitable for a sparkline, or an empty list when it is not worth drawing.
A list qualifies only when it is predominantly numeric: at least
SPARKLINE_MIN_POINTS elements are Number and those make up the majority
(>=60%). Non-numeric elements are kept as Double.NaN so they show up as
gaps at their real index rather than silently shifting the curve.
private fun numericSeriesForSparkline(list: List<*>): List<Double> {
if (list.size < SPARKLINE_MIN_POINTS) return emptyList()
val numericCount = list.count { it is Number }
if (numericCount < SPARKLINE_MIN_POINTS) return emptyList()

return list.map { (it as? Number)?.toDouble() ?: Double.NaN }
}
Builds a small inline SVG sparkline for a numeric series, mirroring the
NaN/∞-safe sampling of renderFnPlot: non-finite samples become pen-up gaps,
a flat/degenerate range is padded so it still draws, and series longer than
SPARKLINE_MAX_SAMPLES are downsampled (with the original count noted in the
tooltip). Returns "" whenever there is nothing worth drawing — fewer than
SPARKLINE_MIN_POINTS finite values — so callers can append it
unconditionally. The whole render is wrapped in runCatching so a bad
element costs only the sparkline, never the value display.
