agentExtension { } lets a box extend its document's AI agent, beyond the single tool
aiTool { } gives it. An extension can register tools, context the agent should know before
every turn, a look at — or a veto over — every tool call, and slash commands in the chat.
Pi (earendil-works/pi) has extensions with this shape; what
Field adds is that they are live-coded. Every part is an ownership in the afield.runtime.lifecycle.LifecycleLedger, owned
by the run that registered it, so re-running the box replaces its whole extension at once, a run that
stops registering a part drops it, and deleting the box retires it.
agentExtension("studio") {
context("tempo") { "The piece is at ${bpm} bpm; keep edits in time." }
beforeTool({ it == "DeleteBoxRequest" }) { refuse("Ask before deleting boxes in this document.") }
afterTool { call, result -> if (!result.ok) println("${call.name} failed: ${result.summary}") }
command("tempo", "show the tempo") { "**${bpm} bpm**" }
tool("studio.bpm") { describe("The tempo."); action { bpm } }
}
What the hooks may do
They run on the agent's thread, with a deadline (HOOK_DEADLINE_MS); a hook that throws or overruns is
treated as "proceed" and reported, because a broken observer must not stop the agent. A beforeTool
hook sees the call's name, arguments, origin (the model, a tool program, the backdoor) and declared
effects, and answers proceed() or refuse(message) — the model then gets the message as the tool's
result. An afterTool hook sees a one-line summary and whether the call succeeded; it cannot change the
result. Context arrives in the instructions as document-authored data, framed as such, at most
CONTEXT_CHARS_EACH characters each and CONTEXT_CHARS_TOTAL in all.
Extensions are per document: they apply to AI conversations about that document only.

Registers this box's agent extension id, replacing whatever the box's previous run registered under it.

class AgentExtensionBuilder internal constructor(private val box: Box, private val id: String) {

fun context(name: String, changesOften: Boolean = true, body: (ContextTurnView) -> String?) =
AgentExtensionRegistry.register(box, AgentExtensionRegistry.ContextHook(box, id, name, changesOften, body))
fun beforeTool
Look at a tool call before it runs, and let it ToolCallView.proceed or ToolCallView.refuse it.
By default the hook is an observer that can veto: if it throws or takes longer than HOOK_DEADLINE_MS,
the call goes ahead and the failure is logged, so a broken hook never stops the agent. With
mandatory the hook is a guard: if it throws or overruns timeoutMs, the call is refused, not run.
Use a guard only as a second line: a check the work depends on (a stale revision, an unqualified
cut) belongs inside the tool that does the work, where no extension can be absent or slow.
fun beforeTool(

fun afterTool(match: (String) -> Boolean
Look at a tool call after it has run. Observe only.

AgentExtensionRegistry.register(box, AgentExtensionRegistry.AfterToolHook(box, id, "after#${afters++}", match, body))
fun command(name: String, help: String = "", body: (CommandScope) -> String) =
A chat command, /name args; the returned markdown is shown in the panel, not saved.
fun command(name: String, help: String = "", body: (CommandScope) -> String) =
AgentExtensionRegistry.register(box, AgentExtensionRegistry.CommandHook(box, id, name.removePrefix("/"), help, body))
fun branchState
State of this box's that belongs to the conversation rather than the document — a canvas the agent
paints on, a simulation it is steering. Field calls save (into a file it gives you) before and
after every chat turn in this document, keeps each snapshot with that turn in the chat's session
tree, and calls restore when the conversation moves: rewinding to a message restores the state from
before that message, switching branch the state at that branch's end. restore gets null where
the conversation has no snapshot (before the extension existed): start fresh, or keep what you have.
The file is deleted when restore returns, so read it there.
Before restoring, Field compares the state as it is now with the last state the conversation itself
left (the end of its latest turn, or its last restore). If they differ, something else changed it — a
person dragging, another tool — and onConflict decides: BranchConflict.KEEP (the default) leaves
it as it is and says so in the chat; BranchConflict.RESTORE restores anyway. Either way the state that
was there is saved first, so it is never lost. restore is the place to invalidate whatever was derived
from the old state. With resumeOnOpen, the first time the box registers in a Field process (the
document has just opened) the state where the document's latest conversation left it is restored; leave
it off for state the document saves itself.
