Artworks suspended

Toddler: tabletop visualization

Chain: Interactive displays on escalator

For architects, unbuilt designs contribute as much to the arc of their life-work as buildings actually erected. So too, for us, with these unrealized projects, which propose art for public spaces in novel and ambitious ways.

The Chain project, conceived immediately afterwards, envisioned an artwork with nodes distributed across the retail spaces of an international store chain. The modularity of that design seems promising, as does its intervention in the new reality of “private/public” space.

Toddler (2004) proposed a radical solution to deploying site-specific art in an ever-shifting architectural context (inspired by the post-911 construction/demolition site of the World Trade Center).
