Jeux Deux

Premiere at Boston Pops

In Jeux Deux (2005), live digital projections accompany a piano concerto by composer Tod Machover. The music, for pianist Michael Chertock and Yamaha disklavier, aligns, manipulates and propels visuals prepared from analyses of the performer’s hand movements, creating a real-time illustration of the musical score and its interaction with the physicality of performance.

Lifelike

Lifelike (2002-3) served as the projected decor for Merce Cunningham’s dance “Fluid Canvas.” It fills the stage backdrop with algorithmically generated variations on movements derived from the motion-captured movements of Cunningham’s hands, from the motion-tracked movement of several animals (a horse, a cat, and a fish), and from abstract movements created by keyframe (a searchlight swiveling).

The projections were mainly on the rear cyc of the stage, though at key moments they hit a forest of hanging scrim curtains amid the stage space.
