  • Our old-fashioned radio had all these cities printed across its dial, as if the station assignments of Central Europe would never change.

  • Moving the band back & forth was an easy form of night travel, but what I really wanted to hear was not the official broadcasts from each city, but rather things picked up at random here & there outdoors:

  • bicycle tires crunching the gravel on a dirt road — dogs barking from one hilltop to the next — raindrops on an umbrella unfurled above high heelsnow clicking away down a cobblestone street.
