Pedestrian is a completely synthetic 3D world. Its virutal figures are 3D models, which are animated by means of motion capture.
In the motion capture process, the movements (but not the appearance) of performers are recorded by means of infrared cameras. The resulting motion files are sequenced, altered, and recombined on the computer, and then mapped onto 3D human models called “bipeds.”
The bipeds are “skinned” with texture-maps, and placed in a photorealistic 3D world with architecture, simulated trees, synthetic rain, lighting, cast shadows, and so on.
A virtual camera is placed over this world; from this aerial position, it tracks the activity below and moves across the simulated city.
The foley soundtrack, created by Terry Pender, is synced to the on-screen movements but also evokes a wider world beyond the frame.
The Pedestrian process is not finished until viewers encounter it in public spaces. Their presence around the piece completes its composition and expands its meaning unexpectedly.
